Anticipated Ward 3 waitlist movement for G5?

Anonymous
I know my numbers are good but looking at last years results it claims they took the following:

Janney we are 4th they took 2 last year
Hearst 2nd took 0
Murch 4th took 0
Mann 2nd took 1

Is there any hope or should I focus elsewhere?

Focus elsewhere, unfortunately...

Hyde-Addison is a great option.

Don't count on it. The schools don't really have any incentive to take from their wait lists: it risks overcrowding the classrooms if they get new in-bounds students during the year, and the kids might have special needs or bring down the test scores or be disruptive (and before you say that of course your kid wouldn't, they don't know that and they can't pick and choose).

I moved a child for 5th grade into one of those schools - and I would think twice about it.
The 5th grade was all about re-living the grades PreK-4th in preparation for transition to middle school. My child was always on the outside looking in. They did not have the presence (athleticism / wit) to be included. Their only friend was the other student who entered the school that year.

If you look at the Murch website, they are having meeting about class sizes. So I’d say no

Yes, these schools get a lot of new kids from official enrollment day until almost the of the school year. A kid moves into the boundary and they have a right to the school and the school must make room. So they end up with large classes and no room for anyone via the lottery.

The focus of those meetings is on lower grades, first and second specifically. The upper grades aren't nearly as crowded.

Why is that? Do people go private for upper grades?

Am moving into DC from overseas so unfortunately I can’t change the fact that he will be entering in Grade 5, obviously I’d prefer a different grade to enter a new school for the exact reasons you mentioned.

Did you look at Lafayette? They made a lot of offers for 5th last year. Plus they are a bigger school so maybe less insular. Good luck!
