DD struggling in AP Lang too late to drop or change class

Getting a new tutor. Hoping for a C for the year—she got a D this quarter (new teacher). BUT she is a Junior—what can she do to keep her B average? Mid to High B. Counselor has not replied to emails. Big high school.
It’s affecting her other classes (trying to keep up). Yes I see now she should not have taken the course but thought it would prepare her for college level essays.

We are happy with a B-B+ GPA for college search.

There is no grade "for the year." There is a Semester 1 grade for marking periods 1 and 2, and a Semester 2 grade for marking periods 3 and 4. Each semester course grade is on the transcript, separately.
If you're saying she got a D in marking period 3, then:
A in MP4 = B for Semester 2.
B or C in MP4 = C for Semester 2.
D in MP4 = D for Semester 2.
E in MP4 = E for Semester 2.

What did she take sophomore year for English and what grade did she get?

Can she drop it and take a class online through the Pathways to Graduation program? My DD is in a math class and her teacher says kids can be added through April. It’s self-paced so she’ll just have to work at a quicker pace to finish.

She took Honors English before. B

The best thing she can do besides study/work with the tutor is to actively engage with her teacher. She (not you) should talk to the teacher, let them know she’s struggling but committed to going everything she can, ask for extra advice, help etc.

My ADHD kid was always great about talking to his teachers. Not to suck up or grade grub but to genuinely show he cared about the class and was doing his best. His teachers in turn appreciated this and always extended him as much grace as possible, with extra help after class and during free periods, extra credit, etc.

Thank you. Yes will have her try that, she’s a bit intimidated by teacher. She knows she is struggling. She has the free tutor but will look at a costly one too as she needs the extra help. Thanks.

I’m curious which school this is. AP lang is super easy at my kids school.

Just because it’s easy for your child, does not mean it’s easy for everyone. Please remember that all children have different strengths and weaknesses and not all children have 4.0 GPA’s and perfect test scores.

AP testing starts in 3 weeks. Is she signed up? Focus on test preparation. If she earns a 4 or 5 that will buffer a lower grade in semester B. What did she earn in semester A?

So why was she allowed to take AP this year? A B in a previous class tells me she shouldn’t move up levels.

I teach AP Lang. It is difficult to get a D if you are doing the assignments. This may mean that your DD is not taking opportunities to revise her written work. Tell us more about what is happening with her grade and maybe we can help her salvage the situation.

AP Lang teacher here. I disagree with this advice. Fix your grade and forget the exam.
