Helllp my cat is in heat

Good Samaritan that I am, I rescued a cat from the street. We couldn’t locate the owner, so now she is my cat. It’s been about 30 years since I owned a cat. I took her to the vet and he looked her over and said she probably had not been spayed. Then he said, you’ll keep her indoors, right? And I said yes. He said, you don’t NEED to spay her, she will just be annoying a few times a month. Since she has to come back for a second distemper shot, so I need to follow up with the vent. Anyway, I just figured I would get around to spaying her at some point this month. Well she’s in heat now, and she’s beyond annoying, she’s absolutely unbearable. This will be our first night with horny cat. Can I shut her in a spare bedroom? She normally has free rein of the house at night, but I really cannot have her inside my room yelling like this. I’ve already scoured the Internet for things to calm her down, and we have tried playing with her and massaging her and giving her catnip, etc. Before you say “spay her” I already have an appointment, with the same idiotic vet, who said that would be fine to not speak her and she would just be a little annoying.

Ha sorry I meant the vet who said it would be ok to not spay her.

Oh my OP. So much sympathy. I remember this once from my childhood and how chaotic it was! No advice just positive vibes.

I’d be worried if you lock her in the spare bedroom she might go even crazier and be destructive…

Keep her confined, it isn't just the yowling, she'll likely piss on stuff too. Maybe a bathroom or someplace easy to clean.

Let her out and see if cats can get abortions?

Sorry, no real answers for you! My sympathy they can be so loud.

You need a new vet. Definitely take the cat in to be spayed. You can do it now, even while she is in heat. (I foster lots of kittens and sometimes go through this. Cats in heat are super annoying.)

Your vet is incompetent.

My friend is a vet who spays stray cats. Yes, they often do.

OMG. I feed your pain, OP, but I have been there before and recently pulled a Karen to get my cats spayed. 15 years ago our kitten went into heat before spay and it was awful. My DH has never looked at her the same way, the little strumpet. He was horrified.

I rescued a cat who ended up being pregnant, giving birth to one female kitten. She is a barn cat and the vet wanted to wait until 12 months before spaying the kitten (I took them in at 4 months, when kitten was fully weaned and could come into heat). I was sure, given her family history, the kitten would meet a deadbeat dad just like her mother did and I’d be in the same position again.

I basically told the vet I couldn’t keep her locked up for 8 months (true) and explained that, while some cats don’t come into heat at 4 months, some did and this kitten absolutely needed spayed NOW. They did it and honestly that kitten bounced back from the spay faster than her mother did. She barely noticed she’s been spayed, while mom slept a lot for a few days.

My advice to you is to lock her in the basement or something and use earplugs until your appointment. Call the vet, they might move up the spay but usually also charge a bit more to spay a cat while in heat. And complain about how horrible it was! Maybe you can save another family being scandalized.

While this is true and J know first poster was joking, don’t do this. It is harder on the mother.
