I want (need) to quit for personal reasons (serious burnout and need to recover) and work reasons (feeling undervalued and thrown under the bus).
The timing is very bad for the organization but good for me -- spring/summer/fall would be excellent times to regroup and recover. I don't want to mention any work reasons for leaving. What can I say when I resign and how much notice should I give? I am middle management level, and the company has been good to me over the years. How bad is this for future prospects of getting a new job and how would I explain the time off? I am close to being able to retire but probably not at 100% ready, so I would encounter ageism in addition to a gap in employment if (when?) I do need to work again. |

| Can you try a vacation or unpaid leave? The only thing that gives me pause is that HR people are stupid and often reluctant to hire someone who doesn’t currently have a job. If you could clear your head without quitting, I would try that first. |

Take vacation time until your head is clear. You can't quit right now because of the recession and it's horrible timing unless you are independently wealthy but you wouldn't be working in the first place if you were. You can however stand up for yourself after you were thrown under the bus and take a vacation. Empower yourself and you will be ok. |
| Jump on some job boards and get inspired to start applying. Adopt the mentality of having “quit in place” and spend your mental energy on finding the next thing. |

It depends what your field is. I can easily get a job if I left, but the hiring process can be long so I would have to account for that. Dh works in software development and has had jobs basically thrown at him whenever he's been looking for a new job. He switched jobs a couple months ago and had 4 job offers to choose from very quickly.
As for reason, you can just give a very bland answer. "wantrd new opportunities". Whatever. I always say 2 weeks at least because I wouldn't want to risk burning a bridge. |

I too am struggling with this. There's bullying going on. I wish workplaces did something about bad behavior. |

I feel this so much OP. I honestly wish I could quit as my employer put SO Much pressure on me to work insane extra hours (unpaid) in order to meet completely unrealistic demands and then when there was an opportunity for better work-life balance with a contract with better hours, they GAVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE who changed their mind and decided they wanted it at the last minute after I've wanted it for 1.5 years. I'm pissed and feel so disrespected.
I also have no job lined up and I simply cannot afford to do that and risk the money and health insurance and then have a period of time unaccounted for. My plan is to aggressively look for new employment but I recognize it could take time to find the right job. It's a horrible feeling OP and you aren't alone. |
