AAP Appeal Question, work samples for verbal

Anonymous
Hi,

My second grader did not get into AAP and we are appealing. I think it was due to weaker verbal abilities and trying to figure out how best to appeal. Looking for advice, the stats are below.

2nd grade
NNAT 123
COGAT Composit 137, Non verbal 146, Quant 133, Verbal 117
GBRS - 4 FO
For areas of strenght math was marked Y and reading marked N
Iready - 99 percentile for math, 60 percentile for reading

I am guessing the committee looked at his application and said that he could be served well with gen ed language arts and advanced math. Should I do a WISC? I plan to include a writing sample he did that was really good, I held it back in case I needed to appeal. The work samples the school submitted were not great, in my opinion. AART encouraged me to appeal. This is the first time I am going through this, any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

Is your kid in the highest reading group? Are the verbal and iready reading scores reasonably reflective of your kid's ability? I wouldn't push a kid into AAP if they're not strong enough in the verbal areas to handle it.

The CogAT verbal part is odd and can lead to low scores since some kids are very thrown off by the pictures and how to interpret them. If your kid is otherwise advanced in verbal abilities, they might get a much higher score on WISC VCI. If your child is at best above average in verbal, the WISC will reflect that.

GBRS seems low compared to aap admitted kids. It will be most likely denied at appeal. My DD’s friend was in the same boat with low Iready reading test. The kid got in on 3rd without any issue without retaking any tests.

With those GBRS, your only hope is a very high WISC.

OP here - is 4 FO considered a low GBRS? I have no idea how all of this works?

My child reads at a high leve, not sure he is in the highest group. His writing samples that were sent in were not great and I have seen him do better samples.

My kid was completely thrown off by the pictures when he took Cogat. He's strong reader and always above grade level but that was not reflected on his verbal score. His qaunt was over 140. He didn't get in in the first round either. GBRS was not too high. 3F 1C. We ended up getting him done Wisc. Not for AAP though. Turned out his verbal intelligence was the highest of all. 140+ in verbal and all other areas 130+. DC got in on appeal.

It’s not considered low, but it is not really good. You want to have some COs.
