AAP appeal with low GBRS

Anonymous
2nd grade AAP Lvl 4 rejection with 149 NNAT and 139 COGAT. 1st grade GBRS was 14. 2nd grade was 10. 1st grade was not included in the package. 2nd grade teacher is grade, but new to FCPS. What to include in appeal? Or is it not even worth it at that low of a GBRS. Just wait for 3rd grade?

You could appeal by addressing the traits in the GBRS with examples - explain how your DC is creative, motivated, etc. Don't address the low GBRS score by saying the teacher is bad.

Is your child the same gender and race as the teacher? If not, call the principal as say that you'd like to discuss bias in the evaluation.

Is there a GBRS for 1st grade as well? I thought this was specific to the AAP Lv 4 program. Was very disappointed in 1st grade Teacher, and didn't even know break-outs were occurring. Had to fight at beginning of 2nd to get my kid in them. Luckily we're in LLIV now because 2nd grade teacher is MUCH more experienced.

You should absolutely try, OP. A couple of years ago your child would have been accepted automatically. Just a warning, though, that my child with similar scores and a 12 GBRS was rejected on appeal. It's very frustrating. Expectations in Gen Ed are very low.

GBRS of 10 is bit low, did you attach any good parent samples?. Get Wisc v and if good scores supplement in appeal.

What were the actual GBRS? They got rid of the numbers a few years back.

Highest is 4 consistently observed.

GBRSs are Consistently, Frequently, Occasionally, and Rarely observed. People here equate each score with a numeric value but that is not how they show up on the form, oar at least that is not how theyhave showed up the last 3 years.

If you are saying your kid scored the equivalent of a 10 on the GBRSs, then your kids scores were really low. Probably no CO and some combination of FO or OO. Read the comments that went with each of the categories and address those areas. Or read the comments and think about how you can help your child do better in the classroom.

One of my kids got an 11 on the old system which was considered low. I was worried based on comments on this forum even though test scores were high. Thankfully the child got in and the program has been great and the child is still top of the class in high school.

So my suggestion is to keep to keep on appealing every year. Eventually your kid will have a teacher that sees his or her potential.

The COGAT subscores matter more than the overall score. You could have a 141 overall with a 119 in Math, e.g.

AAP criteria has changed drastically since your kid was accepted into the program and It has probably changed the most in the last 2 years. Nobody knows WTH it takes to get in anymore. I don’t think FCPS even knows they’re looking for anymore

The GBRS are low to high: Occasionally, Frequently and Consistently. There is no rarely. I just received back a copy of our GBRS Commentary through our school’s AART. If you’re rejected, can get a copy.
