Are they allowed to do summer classes at NVCC while in HS? |
Yes, mine has done it for 2 years and they transferred into college - but she didn’t take them for HS. |
You have to fill out a form and get it signed by your child's counselor (and the principal if they are 16 or less). Then you submit that to NVCC and they will enroll you in the class you want. You cannot simply enroll yourself on line if you are under 18. You have to go through a few hoops. But, the counselors are used to it.
My kid is actually taking a summer NVCC class that starts before he gets out of FCPS. So, he's basically cutting FCPS classes to go to his NVCC class. Another reason why FCPS should end the school year by the beginning of June. |
The also offer a variety of classes (kind of generic 101 classes) for HS'ers that don't require counselor approval. |
Re: the free classes, they are not offered over summer (unless you are a graduating senior via the Jump Start program). The early college program is offered in spring and fall terms, not summer. |
This is not true. |
Why does your kid need to take classes in the summer? Can they not just be a kid in the summer? |
Interesting, mine did. |
What is the dual enrolled counselor’s name because they told me this is not allowed. I told them what you said and they asked to verify this with the counselor. Thanks |
I never said they were DE classes. They were just regular intro type classes that transferred over to college her freshman year. |
Right - but all classes at NVCC are dual enrolled (DE) when the student is in high school. It doesn’t have anything to do with transferring credits over to high school. So if your child is taking any NVCC classes before graduating high school, they are DE classes and you cannot enroll in them. If your child did, what is the counselor’s name so we can do the same thing. Thanks! |
If the student is still in high school, you can't sign them up using the online system because there will be a hold on their account that prevents it--you'll get an error message. You have to go through your school counselor or, if your student is homeschooled, submit the paperwork to the dual enrollment office, and then they register the student.
|
That isn't correct. High schoolers can sign up for classes without it being a DE class. They will have to pay full nova tuition though (100 something per credit hour). Just go to myNova and sign up for classes on their sis. They are essentially taking college classes in their free time (over the summer). |
You have to pay full tuition to take NVCC classes as a DE student, too.
Incidentally my DD forgot about the procedure and tried to register herself for classes a few semesters ago, and couldn't do it--there's a hold on her account that says she's still a high school student. I believe this is the case for the entire VA community college system. |
This. A high schooler cannot sign up for classes by himself. The hs counselor and parent need to sign off and then only nvcc can enroll them. |
