More of a vent, but i am uttterly frustrated by people with money who move into nice MC neighborhoods like tkpk or silver spring with relatively good schools to get bigger houses and then choose to put their precious kids in private schools.
We are trying to build a community and bring the schools up and these people create a bad trend of pulling a whole group of UMC kids out of the public schools because they cannot handle the diversity and challenges of public schools. All while claiming to be left leaning and to have a social compass. But that is pure white flight. It is depressing. And they dont even seem to see how political and impactful their choice is. I really wish they stayed out of my city and went to live next to the private schools they send their kids to. |
Putting my kid in private prevents the local public’s from overcrowding. You also wouldn’t like what I’d demand from the teachers & admin if my kid were in public. |
Is this takoma park dc? Because if so, you’ve also got public charters causing this problem. |
Who is “we”? I’ll send my kid to whatever school I want, thank you very much. BTW there are also people who homeschool & send their kids to far-flung magnets. It’s really none of your business. I am free to live wherever I want, too. I am not going to sacrifice my child’s education on the altar of diversity.
Not to mention, my kid wouldn’t be allowed to discuss where we went on spring break, our other house or their ECs, or else your child would feel bad & complain of “bragging.” |
Takoma park MD |
And i am free to judge you |
You can have a community even when kids go to private and public. I live in Bethesda and my street and neighborhood has a 50/50 mix. The kids played with each other when they were little, no problem, and we have block parties and events all year. Instead of whining, set up a stronger community association! Ours is well established and runs like clockwork. |
“Causing”? You do realize that no upper middle class, educated people would choose to live in that neighborhood if there were no charters? You think they’d just send their kid to whatever the local public is? Because they haven’t, won’t and don’t. I hope you’re aware of that. |
OP, you don’t really want this person’s kid in school with yours, do you? |
The private school my child attended from k-8, and the boarding school they attend now, are far more diverse than any local public school. |
When my kids went to public in DC, the school was hostile to parent volunteering, tracking, parent advocacy, reducing screen time, nutritional changes in the school lunches and increasing recess. Now my child attends a private more aligned with our educational beliefs. |
You live in the suburbs. |
Good point, but she is still taking one of the very few houses available and i wished i could have a less wealthy neighbor instead who would send her kids to public school. This is absolutely not neutral when more and more newcomers dont care about public schools and move into the available SFHs. And I have plenty of cash myself. Travel extensively and could afford private school. I have zero envy. I just wish Takoma Park stayed the socially minded city it has been for so long. And public school is a KEY part of this project. |
DC would be Baltimore or Philly (economically, educationally and wrt real estate) if there weren’t charters |
As you wish: "out of my suburban city" |
