Parents are you happy with your child high school course selection and ability to get the classes

We are an incoming DCPS parent at Jackson Reec and the chat about getting classes seems worrisome. It seems like it’s messy and there are lots of errors. To be honest it seems like a full-time job to figure it out. Are you happy with how courses are assigned and chosen in MPS high schools? If so which school do you think does a great job?

My kids and everyone I know of, have no problems with course selection and ability to get such classes.

MCPS has students do course selection in Dec/Jan, then they assign staffing and sectioning around student selection. For the majority of courses it isn't a problem to get what you requested. Some electives are over-subscribed and they have to limit enrollment. If a course is under-enrolled, they may cancel it. Students requesting changes during summer or in fall may not be able to get into a course if they are full or because the schedule has a conflict.

I’ve never heard of anyone really struggling with class selection including my 2 kids. I’ve always thought about that more as a college issue. Kids do pick an alternate choice as needed. My kids have also not had trouble changing classes at the beginning of the semester as needed.

However, MCPS has a tendency to not provide IEP supports with the higher level classes (if that’s a concern to you).

Three kids in MCPS and never a problem. Even the time one of mine needed some changes (IEP related), it happened right there in the meeting.

I’ve had 2 in HS- youngest is a sophomore. The only issue my oldest one had was they didn’t get their specific PE request. They got their second choice. They got all their AP requests, arts etc..

No problem at all. In fact, my freshman who wanted to switch to an AP course and another elective at the beginning of the school year didn't have an issue. She's at Seneca Valley.

Two kids went through MCPS. Each had one issue with not being able to get an elective that they wanted and ended up in a “random class that I don’t want to take.” In both cases, DC ended up really enjoying the class.

No issues with core classes.

WOW a DCUM found a topic where no one complained about MCPS (thought I realize we are only on page 1).

There are classes my kid would like to take that their HS doesn’t offer (Latin, certain HL IB courses), but no problems getting their choices out of the ones they do offer.

Wait until the Right-wingers, the private schools parents and the wannabees find this thread.

Two kids at two different DCC schools.

They’ve always gotten the classes they need to get, like the right English, math, history, and science class.

The handful of times they haven’t gotten the class they wanted, it was electives - so instead of say, cooking they got film or weight lifting.

It’s nothing like Wilson in that regard. I don’t know why they can’t get their scheduling together there. I’ve heard stories of kids getting out in completely wrong math classes and it doesn’t get worked out for weeks at which point the kid will be behind in the class. That’s not acceptable.

?

Can you elaborate?

I have two kids at two different DCC schools. One has an IEP and the other a 504. They take AP and IB classes. They have received their supports.
