I think one of Putin’s core mistakes is he is stuck in the 20th century. Japan is looking at Russia (and China probably is as well) thinking how stupid it is to focus on literal timperialism when economic power is the new empire.

Russia invaded China, lol. China had to make garbage treaties with the Russians who took their land. A large portion of Manchuria is Chinese land the Russians invaded and took.
