Blair SMCS Summer Work

Does Blair SMCS have summer packet? When does that come out and how do we locate that? Is it emailed to the kids or do we get it from the magnet website after school closes? I am trying to plan summer activities for my kids and vacation while allotting time for school work.

Factoring camp but mostly for kids planning on taking functions or at least trying it out...

DC missed factoring camp, but there was a summer math packet. I can’t remember if Ostrander mailed it out or it was just on the website. It was no big deal and did not affect our summer plans.

I would save the first week of vacation for factoring camp though. It will help your kid meet other incoming students and get an appropriate math placement.

Factoring camp is the first week right after the school ends. Confirmed by Mr. O.

Thank you. I emailed Mr. O and didn’t hear back. Alas, now we have travel plans. If my DC can attend the first three days, is it a big deal that he’ll miss the last two?

Not at all. Many kids don't go at all due to vacations

MCPS has pulled funding for this year. Whoever said it was needs to go back to Mr O for more info.

Yup, Mr. O just confirmed this today on an email to parents. I am still crossing my fingers and toes for something positive to come through. My child was really looking forward to meeting her cohort.

Yeah, it really sucks that they’ve done this for decades and it gets pulled for our kids who already had to start middle school in virtual. I thought it would be a good opportunity for my kids to make some connections and familiarity before school starts.

This makes no sense. It's an important part of the program. Did they say why the funding got pulled? It cost very little to run it.

MCPS isn’t paying for non credit courses over summer anymore, plus Blair is closed due to work on the roof.
