University of Wisconsin - Madison

Keeps popping up as a suggestion for junior DS. It ticks a lot of boxes for type of school (and no hotter than DMV). But I really know nothing about — except it seems a little hard to get to.

No hotter? You might want to focus on the winter part....

People love it. Has always been popular with DC kids.

The people I've known who went there loved it. I get the idea that campus life is a lot of fun. It does seem tough to get into - my daughter who has good, but not stratospheric statistics (1430 SAT / 3.8 unweighted GPA among other things) was rejected as an out of state applicant.

Which is just as well, it's pretty expensive and she was accepted to in-state (for us) Indiana schools Purdue and Indiana which I think will offer a comparable education for a lot less expense.

Do you mean hard to get to as transportation there? From DCA there is a nonstop flight to Madison everyday (maybe except Saturdays). There are also plenty of flights to Milwaukee then a bus ride of 1-1.5 hours to campus.

DS was accepted this year - he’s considering it. Got in with a 31 ACT/3.6 UW at private not in DC area but still OOS. Full Pay. Seems like a well rounded school. Hoping he chooses it since his other top choice is on the west coast.

I never mention this school to others because I want my kids to get accepted.

I have a freshman at Wisconsin and they love it. Flies to Chicago and then takes the bus. Great school, terrific town, wonderful classes. Highly recommend it!

My kid is very happy there. Even as a freshman, professors have been available and TAs have been fantastic - focused on teaching and the kids.

Weather was not as bad as anticipated. The only disappointment is that, like many colleges, housing is rough. Lots of kids wanted to stay in dorms sophomore year but there were very few rooms for them. Big lottery and long waitlist. Off campus housing can fill a year ahead so you have to be flexible and patient about that.

This is encouraging—these are about my kid’s stats. What’s your kid’s impression of the school?

Congratulations to your son!!! You should be proud! My DC absolutely loved it when we toured the school. Would have absolutely attended if accepted. Unfortunately, DC was rejected 35 ACT/3.7 UW at a DC private. Good luck to your son!

For those rejected, were your kids STEM applicants (eg, CS, Engineering)?
