| DS got a full-ride to VT Honors College (neuro major) along with some other enrichment opportunities. He also got into UNC (no merit aid, no honors or special program) out of state. We know that UNC is better ranked overall, and better ranked for premed and for accessing clinical experience/volunteering. However he really likes the VT school of neuroscience and research, and is determined to get clinical experience one way or another. We can afford UNC OOS, but he may need to take out loans for around 1 year of med school (he wouldn't need to if he went to VT). What would you pick? Would it be harder to maintain a good GPA at VT or UNC? How much harder is getting clinical hours at VT vs UNC? Thanks in advance. Any guidance is much appreciated. |
| I can’t answer your questions, but can say your kid will be in an equally good position for med school school as a graduate of either college, assuming he takes advantage of his opportunities at both places. Save the money for grad school. |
Completely agree. I don’t have personal experience to share, but our neighbor’s son was a Neuroscience major at VT and is now at Hopkins for med school. They rave about his experiences at VT. |
| VT is a great choice! Congrats to your son. |

There aren’t 200 premed students the way they’re at UVA or UNC. But I knew kids every year who got into med school.
Hallmate: https://findadoctor.rsfh.com/details/2117/sean-hislop-vascular_surgery-bluffton-charleston-mount_pleasant-murrells_inlet-north_charleston VT also now has the Carilion med school in Roanoke. It’s small and new but full fledged MD; participates in residency match, etc. |

VT for miles. DS has already shown himself to be incredibly bright and well rounded etc based on. His results of getting a full scholarship. Those same qualities will help him succeed on his path. VT is an outstanding school. Follow the money!

| why do you even consider UNC???????????????? |
| Virginia Tech and don't look back. |
DS is worried that the clinical opportunities at VT are more scarce, or he would need to travel all the way to Roanoke. UNC is already established. |
| UNC 100%. How is this even a question? |
Because VT is full ride and UNC is no aid OOS, dummy. That's why it's VT 100%. Undergrad VT vs UNC isn't going to make a difference, save your money for (very expensive) med school. |
| Absolutely VT. No question. |

| Roanoke is easy from Blacksburg. |
