I recently ordered Chinese food for delivery and the bill was about $80 including tax and a $2 delivery fee, the total was up from where the same food bill would have been a few years ago and I get it. We live 1.2 miles from the restaurant, it takes between 5-8 min to drive there depending how you hit lights. I ordered over the phone and the cashier asked how much I want to tip the driver. I said $5 and she exclaimed, “this is an $80 bill!” so I ashamedly said okay $8.
I’d appreciate thoughts on what is reasonable tipping in this situation. I would appreciate not being lambasted - if $8 or more is appropriate in the current times, let me know, I’ll do it forward going and never post about it again
My thoughts were that the driver had the same minimal work no matter if my bill was $25 or $80, and that I wound up paying $10 in delivery fee/tip for a $70ish pre tax order. Isn’t the delivery fee so the restaurant pays them a slightly higher wage, and then I added $5 for a short drive- seemed reasonable to me. |
| I almost never do food delivery but I would have done $5-8 picking it up. (I think you can consider the $2 to go towards packing it). I probably would have done $10 for delivery, fwiw. |
| Personally I would have given the delivery driver at least $10 in that situation. Gas is expensive, I have no idea how much they are actually getting from the delivery fee/wages, and I want to increase the odds of my food getting to me quickly. Plus, if I am getting delivery it’s because I know picking up the food is stressful (bad parking, chaotic place). |
| If you all are tipping $10 to a delivery person driving a mile (and it sounds like that is what you’d tip irrespective of what was ordered), then likely delivery folks are making way more in tips than the waiters. That seems backwards. |

Some of these tipping threads are getting too much.
If you're cheap, just be cheap. The rest of us aren't. |
| If you don’t want to tip, then get off your rear and pick it up yourself. |
This. When you sit down for table service at an expensive restaurant do you tip less because the bill would have been less at a less expensive restaurant? I sure as h*ll hope not - you tip on the amount of the bill. Same for delivery. |

Both doordash and Uber eats offer to leave about 15% tip. No wait DD is about 10% minimum. Not saying it’s right but just how much they expect.
When I go to pickup myself I leave $1 in their tip jar but when they deliver I want them to do it fast so whatever their minimum is. I use delivery apps so that I don’t have to talk to anyone and god forbid even shamed |
| I tip 15%-20% for delivery. If I don’t want to pay that, I go pick it up. |
Just go pick it up next time. |
| I completely stopped getting takeout because the add on fees and tips are out of control. There are much better options for ready made meals at grocery stores. Vote with your wallet. |
| We do carry out most of the time because of the extra expense of delivery, but the few times we order in I give a $10 tip. |
+1 |
| Normally I tip $10 for anything that is not far. Since they already charge $2 fee, I would be fine with tipping $8. |
This I tip the same as I would at a restaurant. |
