How many middle schools feed into McLean High

Anonymous
Sorry for posting in two places - I was confused about what school system the school is part of.

We are considering a move, and are trying to figure out what high school would be best for my rising 9th grader. McLean High looks like it has a lot to commend it, but we are trying to assess how difficult it would be for him to make new friends. Do a lot of different middle schools feed into McLean?

Use Google. One middle school - Longfellow.

There is enough in and out in this area that he will be able to make friends even though only Longfellow feeds into McLean. Students are used to the churn. Plus, McLean is big enough that no one knows everyone in the classroom. I would recommend a sport or band/orchestra/theatre as a place to start for him.

There are also a fair number of kids who attend K-8 private or parochial schools but who go to public high schools in FCPS like McLean for 9-12.

Tons of activities there. PP mentioned band/orchestra/theatre but there are also sports (and a crew team that attracts a fair number of freshmen).

There are high schools that only have ONE middle school feeder?! Does that seem bizarre to anyone else?

No. There are about the same number of middle schools as high schools in the county.

It seems bizarre because there are some middle schools that feed into at least 3 high schools.

Langley HS is a much better choice, IMHO.  Langley is either under capacity or near capacity with new facilities while McLean is over capacity with much older facilities.  Believe it or not, there are multiple trailers at McLean HS and they will be there for a VERY LONG TIME.  I just don't see it changing anytime soon.

There’s more to a school than its building. We don’t regret picking McLean over Langley.

Neighborhood high schools typically have one or two middle school feeders (in terms of base boundaries; it gets more complicated with AAP programs):

One feeder:

Centreville - Liberty
Fairfax - Johnson
Hayfield - Hayfield (secondary school)
Herndon - Herndon
Justice - Glasgow
Lake Braddock - Lake Braddock (secondary school)
Langley - Cooper
Lewis - Key
McLean - Longfellow
Mount Vernon - Whitman
Robinson - Robinson (secondary school)
South County - South County
West Potomac - Sandburg
West Springfield - Irving
Woodson - Frost

Two feeders:

Annandale - Holmes, Poe
Chantilly - Franklin, Rocky Run
Edison - Holmes, Twain
Falls Church - Jackson, Poe
Madison- Kilmer, Thoreau
Marshall - Kilmer, Thoreau
South Lakes - Carson, Hughes

Three feeders:

Oakton - Carson, Franklin, Thoreau
Westfield - Carson, Franklin, Stone

For AAP, I assume. It was noted at the top of the post these were the feeder patterns based on the base boundaries.
