s/o skipping last week of school for 10th grader

Anonymous
From the MS skipping last week thread.. didn't want to hijack OP's thread.

We also have a chance to visit the entire half side of my family in Asia whom we have not seen in decades. My kid is not in a magnet, but does have a few AP classes.

Do you think it's ok to skip the last week of school for a 10th grader? I don't normally do this (my kids have even commented that I never pull them out of school for trips). But, this is a once in a lifetime chance for us.

Thoughts?

I would talk to the school. Won't APs be done?

Not sure how they'll make up other exams though...

AP exams are done in May. What do 10th graders do the last week of school?

Do you know any teachers that you can ask when grades are due?

Do what you think is right. You know your student best, how good they are, how flexible they are and would be able to adapt to missing. How important opportunity to see family is vs potential loss of last week. You’ll get very different responses that people base on their own family / student / school circumstances, that may be irrelevant to your specific case.

I'm thinking they won't teach much new content the last week of school that they wouldn't cover a little bit the first week -- this is more applicable to math than other classes.

Good student, but not stellar.

What do most teachers who teach 10th grade do the last week of class?

Yes, I can talk to the teachers.

Just get an excuse lined up that will fly. Otherwise it won't really matter.

We are in DCPS - grades are in the week before the last week of school. Nothing is happening the last week. Just work with your kid to make sure all assignments in.

As I understand it, once AP exams are done, so is any meaningful instruction for AP classes. So I don't think your kid will be hindered.

I don't know. Every quarter this year, my kid has had multiple large point, potentially grade changing tests in the final week of the quarter. (Like today! 2 Tests. Many points. Urgh) You will need to find out from each teacher what the plan is. Unfortunately, I find that the true answer is not available far in advance.

Last week of school seems like a waste usually but I'd be afraid to risk it

Hi, OP, I'm the other OP from the MS thread. I agree we both have to ask our kids' respective teachers. Last year in 11th grade, my older kid had a very inexperienced AP World History teacher, who realized he hadn't covered the entire curriculum and gave his students a ton of work *after* the exam. Kids complained and my kid was incredibly stressed out right until the last day of class. So it can happen, with certain teachers.

This has been our experience too. There were two major assignments and a test in pre calculus this week.
