Takoma MS Magnet

Can someone share the profile for a student that might get accepted. Is is based on the test, class grades, or MAP Scores? I would like to consider for my 4th grader who does well in and likes math but was not selected for compacted (4/5) math last year. We had a rough start to elementary with the pandemic and since getting diagnosed with ADHD and treating with medication his grades and MAP scores have improved this year. Wondering if it’s a shot in the dark to apply. Also welcome any suggestions for strengthening skill to prepare for the test perhaps Kumon or other enrichment.

There is no test. If your kid meets certain criteria he is put into a pool of the top 10 percent or so kids and then it’s a lottery.

Unless they change the process next year, that is.

I think it's top 15%. The criteria for getting in is really low

It is still a good program but probably changing. The cutoffs are pretty broad and it really is about the luck of the lottery. A bit bitter because our 99th percentile kiddo was in the lottery, but didn't get in, but TPMS was the homeschool so there anyway. Now helping one of his magnet friends with their math homework.

There's a document linked and a different thread on CES that shows the map scores required to make the lottery pools for schools based on their farms rate.

The bar for the lottery isn't all that high. I think a map score in the 97% would make it into the pool it for a low farms school based on the data of the county released FOIA request.

Nevertheless, the lottery ends this year so no clue what will come next.

When they were forced to start the the lottery because of the pandemic in 2020 they stated the experiment would run for 3 years. Nobody knows what to expect next year.
