We just got this in our weekly message. I’m disappointed as we really liked it last summer!
Summer School Information Our local summer school program will be back this summer, but it will not look like it has in the past. Due to budget restraints, there is a reduction of sites hosting summer school. As a result, our school will be paired with another elementary school in our cluster for a combined program. Dr. Sally K. Ride Elementary will host our local summer school program this summer. The teaching and support staff will be from both schools. There will also be restrictions on the number of students who will be invited to participated. Participants will be identified based on literacy and math criteria determined by the central office. This summer's program will be by invitation only. More information on selection and enrollment will come to you in the coming weeks. Transportation will be provided from central locations. |
| We had a message like that last summer. It was invitation only. |
| That's reasonable. |
| Last summer they let everyone register but then did have to turn some people down. This year they’re making it even smaller. |
| Federal funds are depleted so there’s no possible way to accommodate free summer school for every student. Are you really that surprised? Why is this even a topic of conversation. Completely out of the state’s control. |
| Too bad! My DD did it the summer prior to starting K and it was tremendously helpful to getting her acclimated. She had the same teacher for the school year and most of the same kids were in her class. For a child that was pretty shy, this was a game changer. |
They could if they budgeted for it but instead we get bocce ball and the museum no one goes to. My kid said they talked about bocce ball in PE but never once actually played it. |
What's the museum no one goes to? |
Kid museum. Only a few schools go and they still pay for it. |
Agreed. Sad that it is happening this way. Seems like a missed opportunity. Also feels like it is not being handled the same way across MCPS. |
| It’s absurd. Everyone knows that pandemic learning loss—not just the content, but the time in school with all attendant social/emotional effects—is more the rule than the exception and MCPS cuts the one thing that stands a substantial chance of making it up. |
The pandemic has been over for two years. They offered summer school for everyone for the last two years. They have also offered free tutoring, including during the summer for two years. How much more do you expect them to do? They are offering it to kids who need it academically, not those parents who want free summer care. Stop expecting MCPS to parent your kids. |
