New York

Hi! Moving from NY and will be applying my son to K. Curious to hear where some NYers are and their experience with the whole process. TIA!

You will find former New Yorkers at many of the schools in the area. Where do you plan to live and what types of schools are you considering? Religious, K-8, K-12 etc.
From what I've heard the process of applying to private schools in NYC is more stressful and it is not uncommon for kids to apply to 8-12 schools just for Kindergarten admission. Here too it's a bit of a scene, but it's not as intense, you don't hear as much of feeder preschools and parents paying for test prep for kindergarten entry.

Why would you title your thread "New York" if you are moving to DC?

and DCUM. Only thing missing is some gratuitous grammar or typo correction, but give it time.

OP, where will you be living in DC?

NP- fair point, though.

Good preschools do have competitive admissions, in the sense of more applicants than openings, but not as crazy as NYC. Some preschools do administer some ad-hoc tests of the child, but nothing nearly as sophisticated as NYC. Demand for under-6 daycare exceeds supply, so scout early.

This post might really belong in the separate preschool forum on DCUM, but some indication of where one lives or works will get better quality responses.

My main advice is to try to have home, office, and school all on the same side of the river. The bridge crossings are perpetual bottlenecks, even if there is no en route accident on a given day.

We will be near the Montgomery county border and NW DC

That location leaves you with a lot of options, these are probably the closest/easiest but there are others

K-12:
Sidwell
GDS
Potomac (would need to get the school's bus)
Maret (a little further but assuming you work downtown not far)
Bullis (again would need to get the school's bus or drive to do drop off)

K-6/8
WES
Sheridan
Lowell
St. Patrick's
NPS (goes through 6)

K-2/3
Primary Day
Beauvoir
Concord Hill
River School (but they are expanding to higher grades)

DC is the Minor Leagues compared to NYC. The private schools in NYC are much more elite and there are many more of them because there are many more people in NYC + many more filthy rich people in NYC.

Given that context, you would be better served with a European Boarding School. If you are truly stuck with DC choices, hire a private tutor or lower your standards to Beauvoir, Sidwell, GDS. Good luck with the southern/backwoods culture shock you will find here in the DMV.

What exactly would the private tutor for K be doing? What are the NYC kids doing in K that they don't do elsewhere??

Lol—someone on this board is really sucking NYC private schools’…parts. What a pitiful post.

They ought to send their kindergartener to a European Boarding School? Interesting.

If you send your kindergarten child to a European boarding school, while you reside in DC, you clearly don’t like your child.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
