Washington’s Green Grocer?

Anonymous
I have been a WGG customer for years and it seems they sold their customer list to South Mountain Creamery and just shut down? Does anyone know exactly what is going on? I am a member of both WGG and SMC (though I very strongly preferred the former). I got a vague message about my delivery coming from SMC instead so I thought they were sharing drivers (which isn’t great since SMC delivers while I am asleep and stuff sits on average 7 hours… even with remembering ice in the box, the greens wilt if it is hot, and wilt regardless of my efforts if it is too cold). I was disappointed my box that arrived today doesn’t have the usual WGG goodies (like the bread is different and not liked in my house, the produce is different - like the tops were cut off the beets and they were dry). Are all those amazing meal kits from Chef Mimi at WGG truly a thing of the past? I will also really miss the bakery options from WGG. Someone please clue me in. I’m so sad it seems WGG is gone and someone somewhere seemed to think SMC was the same and could just be subbed in. Nope. Suggestions for new places to try that deliver to NoVa are welcome!

I stopped using WGG years ago when the owner was completely rude to me due to a failed attempt at delivery.

Thanks for your note - if you switched to another similar service, which one did you like? I’m in the market…

I was wondering what happened too. WGG ruled. SMC is terrible. I agree about the beets. I think us customers were owed an explanation about what was going on. This is not a good way to do business. But I don't know what happened either. Try Market wagon. Not as much produce but I have been satisfied.

It's funny, I switched to SMC!
But I thought their ready to go meals were so bad and racist, I had to stop too
(Completely inauthentic Eats Asian and Indian foods with uncomfortable, racially insensitive descriptions. I wrote detailed feedback top them in a survey but no one responded to me)

We left SMC because the quality of the produce seemed to decline after they took over From the Farmer back in 2021. We've been using Seasonal Roots and it's OK. The standard small basket options are often very boring (and not necessarily in season, just produce). The bread (add-on) is pretty good. It is possible to swap items, and last week one of the alternate options was kalettes, which we tried for the first time and really liked! Some weeks I'm happy to have some fresh produce arriving mid-week, but recently I've been skipping a lot of weeks.

Any updates here? Really missing Chef Mimi’s meal kits. And the rest of my delivery!

WGG (the most amazing business) sold to Chef Mimi years ago. It declined from there although she/they offered a pretty good service and kept the basics. It sold again to SMC and is harldy about produce anymore, and certainly not about supporting local organic farmers.

SMC turned out to be a terrible company. Not good quality and rude people. I loved WGG who supported organic farmers and all was good quality and great selection. So sorry to see them sell out to the inferior company..

I miss WGG so much. But I’ve been happy with 4P and Seasonal Roots since its demise.
