Co-Op Preschools

What are thoughts on co-op preschools? Pros, cons?

Pros - wonderful sense of community; because you're in the classroom and around the school a lot, you're very connected to their learning experience; you get to know the other kids well, and you form strong bonds with the other parents. Cons - a heck of a lot of work; very difficult for working parents.

Co-ops are also difficult if you have a younger child, unless you can find a sitter or relative to watch the other child while you help the school during school hours.

Several of the co-op preschools I have visited offer sibling sitting while you are co-oping, so that may be an option of you have a younger child.

I agree with first poster about the sense of community. It's really nice because you get to know the other parents with children of the same age, and they usually live near you, too. As my daughter is now in her 2nd year at a co-op, we are extremely comfortable leaving her with other families for drop-off playdates, and they are comfortable with us. There is work involved, and it's certainly easier if one parent is at home, but I have heard that other types of preschools also require some parent participation. A big pro: much cheaper than other preschools.

Does anyone know of a co-op that has immediate openings for 2yr olds (26mos) in the NW DC area? I am starting contract work so I would be available to do my share of care-giving.... thanks! I can be contacted directly at jennadeli@yahoo.com

Thanks!
