| My kid is turning 18 and has asked for a red velvet cake. I usually make simple (but tasty) birthday cakes at home, but for milestone birthdays, I like to splurge on something from a bakery that is delicious and fancy/special. Does anyone have a favorite red velvet cake that would be great for this occasion? I don't need a large cake; it'll just be a few of us at home celebrating. I'm in SE, DC but willing to drive for a great cake. |
| I like the red velvet cake at Nothing Bundt Cakes but they don't have a store in DC |

Cakeroom in Adams Morgan is good!

Happy Birthday to your son! Milestone!
My favorite cake shop is Tout de Sweet in Bethesda, the head chef is French. Look on their website to see if they have a red velvet cake. I think you need to order in advance. |

I hear you on the wish to splurge on a fancy bakery for a milestone, but in my experience that works best for specialty stuff like opera cake or whatever. Wegmans makes very good classic cakes like red velvet.
You could also ask Ted's Bulletin if they will make a red velvet cake for you. Some years ago they made me a custom birthday cake and it was very good. |
| Wegman's is terrible. I was so disappointed. |
| Alexandra Pastry Shop is really good! We got our wedding cake here. It was a few years ago but I recall we tried the red velvet and it was yummy. |
| Sorry, I meant Alexandria. https://www.alexandriapastry.com/ |
| Victorias Cakery if you’re in VA |
I got one from Hollin Hall Pastry Shop (not sure they're related)? 50 bucks, could tell the cake was fresh but all we could taste was cream cheese. Disappointed for that price. If I were OP, and had the time, I'd try a sample. |
| Buzz Bakery in Alexandria |
I love Victorias Cakery! I regularly get their cakes for events and have never had a bad one. It’s in Fairfax, though, which is very far from OP |
