My hometown is a place that is considered almost universally “symbol” of a certain way of life and political moment. I split my time between there and here now due to family obligations. It gets a very disproportionate amount of media attention relative to its size, and every president visits it. And you know what? It swings politically because residents of places like that & similar find the pandering humiliating, annoying and cringeworthy. |
Actually from quotes from various places in Iowa it seems like they come to rely on the attention. Though agreed the pandering - “I’m from Florida, but I’m not from-from Florida” - is embarrassing. |
