Drivers: if you see a car backing up, why do you just keep going?

Anonymous
I see this ALL the time in parking lots. Person is backing out, already 1/2 out of the space, etc. Person going straight looking for a space sometimes has to swerve around car backing up. A lot of the times, people are driving on the left side of a wide parking lot aisle instead of the right - even without lines, doesn’t it make good driver sense to stick with the conventions of the road? I saw a collision yesterday - person backing out had absolutely no damage - a little paint transfer. Person driving had a scrape that went from the front quarter panel all the way to the rear wheel well. And then there are the people who walk behind cars as people are backing up. They see the car backing up and don’t stop and simply wait or change direction - they just keep going. I said something to someone once and the response was “I have the right of way”. I said “Yes, you do, but what good is that if you are injured or killed?”

I never understood people who back into spaces, but now I do. I installed a back-up camera in my old truck, and it’s unreal how many times I’ve had to jam on my brakes because there was no one there, I start backing up, and someone just walks behind me or a car just drives behind me as if I don’t exist.

People, you have nowhere to go that is so important that you cannot wait a moment for someone to finish their maneuver. Common courtesy is lost.

I don’t know, but I suspect these are the same people who speed up when pedestrians are walking across the road.

Truly maddening (and dangerous!).

If I’m driving down a parking lot row, I have the right of way. You should not be backing up into a moving car. If you have already started backing out when I enter the row, I’ll stop and let you finish. The backer does not have the right of way though.

I’m in a hurry and I’m more important than you. Duh.

This is such a crappy attitude.

If you see that a car is backing up, why not just stop and let them finish backing up?

Society sucks because of people like this.

The OP is about situations where a car was already backing out of a space when another car turns down that aisle. OP isn’t saying people should start backing out even if a car is already driving down the aisle.

+1 sometimes I'll inch back a bit so I can see who is approaching but I fully expect cars to go around me and not stop for me to back out. I fully back out when it is all clear. Basic driving skills

Maybe but most people yield b/c backing up is challenging and they aren't a-holes.

I agree with you, OP. I warn my kids all the time that you should never walk behind a car that’s in reverse because it’s very likely that the driver can’t see you until it’s too late.

Sidebar scenario: People who back INTO a space. See, those are the worst people on the planet.

If they drive slowly and use a turn signal so I can anticipate what they’re going to do, I don’t mind it, but the ones who drive past the space, slam on their brakes and then suddenly back up are the worst.

It is literally the rules of the road. Do not back up into traffic. Or people.

Being “polite” (i.e., unpredictable) is illegal and dangerous.

I’m not talking about backing up when a car is approaching.

If you’re in the middle of backing up and a car starts to approach, they should stop.
