Tour college at young age

Anonymous
We don't travel much, only 1 week per year. We stay around in dmv area for the rest of the year. I suggest to DH that wherever we go to, let's tour college campus if there are any good ones nearby there. Kids are young, a preschooler & an early ES kid. Dh laughs at my suggestions.

Since we are planning to do boston this year, I want to tour MIT & Harvard. DH says that that is a waste of 1 day for college tour, and he does not think kids will be interested. I think it is a cool idea, but I don't know if young kids get anything out of it. What do you think?

We walked around Harvard with our then 4 year old. It was fun for us to see.

You’ll get something out of it, so if you want to do it, then go. If you genuinely want your kids to get something out of it, you need to wait til they are older.

I would not waste a day in Boston on a college tour (presumably you're just walking around campus self guided) with a preschooler and young ES kid.

There's so much fun kid stuff they'll enjoy much more in Boston.

And it's only a "cool idea'" for you.

Do you have a connection to MIT or Harvard?

Maybe do a drive by or drive the campus.

Why? On the 0.01% chance your kids will go? They won’t even remember this tour

There used to be a Curious George store by Harvard, not sure it is still there. That’s fun for the kids.

Op here. I don't have connections to harvard or MIT, but I know a friend graduated from MIT decades ago. If we do tours, we will do guided paid tours for harvard & MIT. We will check out the museum at harvard, and to answer pp's question, only curious george's store is closed. I am not sure if kids can handle all of the walking. I am hoping that if my early elementary kid likes boston or campus, it may give him more motivation word hard to achieve this dream.

I would not waste vacation time touring colleges with young kids. This seems like a waste to me.

This has to be a troll post. Grade B- Work harder, OP. You, too, can achieve your dream of an A+ troll post.

I might not do it with kids that young, but it’s a great thing to do with slightly older kids. It’s not about them going there in the future. It’s about seeing a place that has played a big role in US history. It’s not that different from taking them to see Lexington and Concord. My kids had fun seeing Yale and Stanford.

I don’t know what you mean by paid tours.

If you mean the official school tours then no. It’s going to be distracting and slow down the tour for the high school students.

Go to the Science Museum or the Children's museum instead. Your kids will get much more out of that than a tour around a college campus.
