I think a lot of careers are frequently derided, some with more justification than others. I think your best response would be to develop a sense of humor and recognize that there’s usually something absurd to be found in most aspects of life, including our careers which are a major portion of our lives. Laugh when you can about jokes directed at your career (or even make your own), give others the benefit of the doubt when you don’t find their jokes funny, educate as necessary, and consider how this feels before you joke about someone else (career or otherwise).

OP here. It’s not that I’m in a career that people would find morally objectionable (so not lobbyist or OnlyFans). Rather, it’s that people don’t understand what I do and assume I am either just a paper pusher, that the work is mind-numbing or that it’s meaningless. I also have to sign confidentiality agreements frequently and am not really allowed to explain what I’m doing.

And lastly, there is some insecurity at play.

I work in HR. People have all kinds of ideas about HR. I don’t care, I like my work.

I work at a tech firm in recruiting (which is part of HR) and hear all kinds of crap. I don't care - I love the people I work with, the company, the people I get to hire, etc.
