Does anybody have experience with this program ? Is it considered a competitive summer program ? Does it help improve
admissions chances by a smidge ? I get that it will certainly give a good idea of what Wharton is like and so help DC figure a few things out. Thank you ! |
No these are just money grab stuff for rich people.
It doesn't help at all |
My understanding (gleaned from online research) is that this particular program used to help with Penn/Wharton admissions but that has mostly changed. It might help a smidge but not sure that smidge outweighs the price which is quite high. |
Thank you, how did you do the online research that led you to that conclusion ? Is it considered a competitive program at all ? I see a benefit that it will help DC figure whether they like Wharton at all or not, even assuming no other advantage. But also worried it might signal prestige etc etc |
Competitive to get into, but meaningless when it comes to admissions. |
A lot of college confidential etc…I gather it’s a quality program and competitive. But $$$$. |
I’m the PP and I think the signaling privilege thing may be overwrought. I think a lot of people want that to be the case but while it’s not a hook to do one of year programs, I’m not convinced you get dinged for it either. It’s not like the colleges don’t want people with deep pockets also.
You also don’t have to put these programs on your common app. My kid is doing several reasonably priced pre college things to explore areas of interest and get used to being away from home. He probably won’t even list them in his app. With LBW, I would definitely put that on a Penn app. I’m not sure about other schools (could suggest Penn is your first choice and get you yield protected elsewhere) |
Thank you. I take that point - definitely sold put it on the Penn App. The Q is its 3 full weeks in the summer so is that a good way for a rising senior to spend the time ? DC also has a planned research internship which is virtual but will have to work weekends and nights. Willing to do it but I guess I was trying to figure whether it was worth it or not. |
Yeah, I’m the PP and I think you really have to weigh your finances and what you think would benefit your kid vs the opportunity cost of not doing something else. I doubt it moves the needle much on admissions. |
