Tells us about the Gen Ed classes at Langley HS and how they compare to GenEd at other FCPS HS

Reading another thread made me wonder. Are Langley HS Gen Ed classes filled with ruffians like other HS in certain parts of western Fairfax?

I don't think ruffians can afford to live in Great Falls.

The term “Gen Ed” is really not used after ES. But some of the regular classes are challenging and as always, teacher dependent. Not sure how someone could compare HS if there kid is only attending one HS. We encouraged our “non AAP-except for math” student to take honors classes freshman year. They ended up taking all but one Honors course and did just fine. The regular class was also challenging but kid got all A/A- for end of year.

Assuming you mean the Annandale HS thread?

HS is HS - there will be fights, drugs, sex, pressure and bullying and there will be hard working kids, fun activities, inspiring teachers, and kindness. The $ doesn't eliminate the bad.

Just be a good parent - keep connected with your kid and the school - meet their friends - support good teachers - help your kid navigate and develop some empathy.

And stop piling on the disadvantaged kids - go donate to the AHS Food Pantry. Or better yet, take your kid to volunteer Saturday collections.

Should add that Annandale is another maligned FCPS school like the one(s) in another thread. BTW do you really think Annandale is western Fairfax County?

OP/PP was reading a thread that started out about South Lakes and turned into a discussion of South Lakes and Herndon. Both are in western FFX.

There are problem kids in both GE and AP classes, OP - you can't avoid them, in any school, including LHS. The more you know.....

It's commonly known that gen ed classes at Langley are often more rigorous than taking AP classes at the low performing schools. AP at Langley is equivalent to a second-year's education at UVA.

I assume that's tongue in cheek although the Honors classes at Langley are probably at least as rigorous as the IB English courses that are now the default English class for 11 and 12th graders at several schools.

A lot of Langley kids take “gen ed” classes. I can’t tell you if regular classes are full of ruffians, but both of my older kids took regular classes alongside Honors and APs, and I don’t think they are ruffians. My DD took regular Pre-Calculus/Trig after getting a B- in Algebra II Honors during the pandemic, and then AP Calculus as a senior. She did say the regular math class was easy, but it still set her up nicely for AP Calc.
