I have a garbage bag full of random paperwork my parents want shredded. To save time, I’d like to throw money at the problem. I’ve seen people here suggest UPS for bulk shredding, but reviews online say that you must individually insert each paper into the bin, so you’re better off just shredding at home.
Is this true? Is it just a larger-scale individual shredder, or is it something in which I can just dump and go? |
It's a locked bin, like a big garbage bin. But I think it does have a small opening, and employees can't open the bin top (only the shredding company can, so it's secure). |
You can call up Shred-Ace or similar an dhave them to do a home viist or drop boxes at their office. |
Google "community shred" and your area. There are free events all the time.
If you are in/near Montgomery County, you can drop off your papers to be shredded for free here: https://www.cleancutshredding.com/services/#drop_off I've used it numerous times, super easy and secure. |
That makes sense. I’m assuming then that it’s a large bin that Iron Mountain or whoever, shreds at once, once full? |
If you trust them, the employees at my store will load the bin for you. I decided to do that since I had a box full |
Only the shredding company can open it. So, why should it be assumed that all persons employed by the shredding company are trustworthy? |
With that logic, we are never safe!!! What if the person we give info to over the phone steals our info!!! Heaven help us all, the folks at the bank!!! |

There’s a place in Rockville that will shred it right in front of you on Saturday mornings. Patriot Shredding. N |
The shred bin opening at UPS stores takes a sheaf of paper at a time. Maybe 20 sheets?
Or you can look for community shreds. Arlington has one first Saturday for residents only. You show ID. |
You don't have any friends who work in law or accounting? I work in law and go into the office once a week. We have shredding all over the office that gets emptied regularly. |
You may need to disassemble a few binder clips etc. but I emptied 6-8 grocery bags full in about 5 min. Faster than shredding myself. Call ahead though because sometimes the bin is full |
Unless they are covering up a bunch of crimes, just throw it away and tell them you took it to UPS. |
Patriot shredding in Rockville does a mobile shred truck in their parking lot from 9-12 on Saturdays. I think they charge $10 a banker box. You see it put in truck and shredded via video screen. |
