I saw it when originally aired. 8 days of a dramatization of Alex Haley’s novel. It came to mind this week as Levar Burton was on Rob Lowe’s podcast talking about his career. A week before airing, Burton’s manager introduced Rob to a man who was about to become the most famous man in the world.
The refusal of Kunta Kinte to initially acknowledge his English name in spite of the whipping was heartbreaking. Fiddler played by Louis Gossett Jr. was real. The cast was stellar. Did you watch for all 8 nights? It still holds up and I think better than the 2016 version though this scene is far more brutal. Burton also said in the first season of ST:TNG, his lack of vision wearing the hair retention device over his eyes caused him to bump into a lot of things. |
Yes of course. Didn’t everyone? A lot less competing for our attention back then.
I didn't watch then, because I was too little but I have seen the original one several times and the sequel.
I was little, but my extended family gathered to watch it. I most remember my relative’s emotions rather than the show itself. I saw it again as an adult and then the remake as well. I like the original better.
I listened to it on audible and loved it. Have not watched yet though.
Yes. I'm sure some Netflix idiot will redo with a talentless pretty face.
Is this streaming anywhere? I’m 50 and remember bits and pieces but would love to see the whole hing.
We definitely watched and I have memories of watching but not the specifics. My impression was the everyone in America watched, but I’d really love to see the regional breakdowns on viewership. I was pretty astounded when I learned that people in the south still had confederate flags and had gone with the wind parties and such.
Not free at the moment. |
You can stream it on Prime. I saw it when it came out when I was in the 4th grade. I just recently watched it again along with the new version, Roots, The Next Generation and Queen. It still holds up but it’s definitely dated. I think the 2016 version was well done.
Not for free currently. It had been on Tubi and HBOMax but not currently |
Yes. The whole famiy watched it.
What year did it originally air? I watched it with my family, but I was very young so I only remember bits and pieces. I remember watching it over several days and I remember the scene, which made me cry. I read the book in high school and again as a young adult.
^^1977. I was 6.^^
I wasn't born when it aired and I've never seen the whole thing, but we watched pieces in school.
