Statins and weight gain

Anonymous
I know this sounds frivolous, but....has anyone had weight gain after starting statins? I've been prescribed a statin (female, early 50's), and one of the listed side effects is weight gain, due to increased hunger. Having just lost about 20 pounds, I am terrified of gaining the weight back!

Is this just yet another listed potential side effect, or have people experienced this? If I'm going to have greatly increased hunger on this, I at least want to be prepared.

Thanks.

I started Crestor a year ago after losing 10 lbs. I have lost another 10 lbs since then, and it's been hard but no harder than before. I'm 56 and female. Hope this helps.

I have not noticed increase in hunger or weight gain. But my triglycerides went down by half.

I haven’t noticed that either.

I started statins last June when I'd begun losing weight in April.

I noticed immediately there was a surge in my appetite that lasted for maybe 2-3 wks. I completely fought it and continued with the regime that I'd established in terms of exercise and calorific intake (daily 1200-1500 max) and I didn't gain any weight at all.

I think it's just fighting the urge to stuff your face, which the statins make you feel like doing, at least temporarily. Most statin side effects wear off.

Actually lost a few pounds on statins - but I actually had a decreased appetite after I started them (in combination with lisinopril).

When they test drugs, anything that happens to anyone gets listed as a side effect. So if someone gets a bloody nose: side effect. Someone eats like a pig and lards out? Side effect.

this is not true at all, it has to be over a certain amount of people
for instance, I stopped getting daily headaches after taking statins and when I researched it, there was evidence this was a positive side effect, but not one big enough to warrant attention.

No weight gain here.
