Hello well traveled DCUM: We are in the early stage of planning a trip with my parents for a week in August. They want to go somewhere in New England.
We're looking for a place that's got some restaurants and stuff to do (and where you can find a rental that is walkable to town - so probably not the Berkshires since it seems hard to find a rental that is walkable to stuff). We'd love if there are lots of day trips we can take from there. If you know that some local attractions are wheelchair accessible, all the better. Don't need beach, but don't mind beach! We'd like to be able to rent a house for $5k or less for the week, which excludes places like Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket (and makes the Cape fairly out of reach). My folks are in RI so probably not in RI, just so they have a change of scene. We went to Gloucester, MA, a couple of years ago, and it was really nice but I think we'd like someplace different this time. Any favorite NE towns that might not be on our radar already, given those parameters? Thank you! |
| Connecticut - Madison, New London, Mystic. |
Mystic is a good idea - thanks! |
| Portland, ME |
| Newport |
Did you read the OP? |
| Just a warning in case this Bar Harbor comes u, I had trouble getting around Bar Harbor in wheelchair. Many restaurants are not accessible. Owners were kind and offered to carry me in but I declined. |
| I would say somewhere in Maine - Portland, New Brunswick, Kennebunkeport... |
| Portsmouth NH? |
I also love Portland, but it’s a little more city… a small city, but gorgeous scenery within minutes. Amazing shopping and food. But not a beach town if that’s what OP wabts. |
| Check out Conway, NH or the lower coast of Maine, ie York up through Wells/Old Orchard Beach area. Should have things within that price range, walkability, and decent food options. |
| One of the Casco Bay islands could be fun. |

Boothbay Harbor
Stowe, VT North Conway, NH Camden area in Maine Newport, RI Boston and do day trips from there |
This is OP - and I really appreciate that insight. |
| Thank you for all these suggestions! |
