RIP. I don’t know him from outside of fiddler on the roof, but I love that movie.

I saw him perform Fiddler live in the early 80’s. I had already had seen it once live, but Topal’s portrayal was amazing.

So sad. Fiddler on the Roof is one of my all-time favorite movies. Sallah Shabati is a fabulous movie too, about the cultural disconnect between Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews in Israel.

I met him in London in the 90s at an audition (I was auditioning) for the stage version of Fiddler on the Roof. He was charming. I didn't get the part and the show closed early. So that was that.

Maybe it didn't age well. I saw it in 1994 and remember enjoying it.

He was only 35 during the filming of Fiddler, and he had already played the role of Tevye on stage for several years prior to that.
