| Do auto repair shops mark-up parts? For example, if my repair was $200 parts and $100 labor, I've always assumed that they didn't actually pay $200 for parts and it included 10-20% mark-up. Anyone knows? I am just curious. |
| Of course they do, that is how they make it a profitable business |
| Yes. Same as anyone who works on your home. It's how they make some profit. Rationale is that they took the time to get the part and possibly store it on site. So there is effort on their end to get the right parts. And the consumer does not have a garage full of spares. |
| Yes. This is marginal profit. Each stage in a supply chain needs a cut. |
Interesting. What’s the reason behind not allowing customers to get their own parts and have mechanics install? Liability? |
Big time |
Yeah, you bring faulty parts and the repair is not successful. Then you want the shop to fix it. For free. Only crazy people would allow you to bring your own parts. |
| Yes but keep in mind they also pay for same day delivery from their suppliers. You can often order parts for less if you’re willing to shop around and wait longer. |
| My car shop will get your parts for 15% markup. But they also let you bring your own parts. |
