Discovery elementary for special needs

Anonymous
I’m looking for feedback on how Discovery Elementary is for a student with special needs. We're moving to the area and about to sign on a house that is zoned for Discovery Elementary and Williamsburg for middle. My oldest kid has a pretty robust IEP for ASD and ADHD. He currently has a 1:1 aide and is in a mainstream classroom but I expect that will change somewhat when we convert his IEP to VA. School support is my number one priority for his well being (and mine). Discovery was recommended to me by a friend of a friend but I'd love additional feedback since we still have time to look somewhere else if this is a dumpster fire waiting to happen. I'll gladly take opinions on Williamsburg for middle or other elementary schools you would recommend. We're willing to commute a bit for the right school if we need to. Thanks. (This is cross posted to the special needs forum as well).

1:1 aide in the mainstream classroom? I have not seen that in APS, although I’ve seen kids with very high needs and disabilities in mainstream classrooms. There are special smaller classrooms co-located with some schools for different needs, but not sure if Discovery has any. Some schools have “magnets” for certain special needs integrated, for example Fleet elementary for the hard of hearing.

Yes there are 1:1s in APS general ed classrooms.

I’ve seen some that were basically 1:1 though the IEP didn’t state as such. OP you may want to look at the MIPPA program, might be where your kid will end up

We are at nottingham which is blocks from discovery. There are a few kids who have 1:1 aides. They are pretty low functioning and they are in inclusion classrooms but get pulled out a lot. If you child is on grade level, I wouldn’t expect 1:1 aide.

Just consider the timing- You should set up a meeting ASAP to let them know you are coming!
