S/O SSL hours

Anonymous
My kid is in a private K-8 and currently in 5th, I don’t think the MS does SSL hours, how many hours will she need to get through in HS? I didn’t go to school here so have no idea, I just know most kids seem to get a jump on them in MS whereas my kid won’t start until HS. I love the idea though, I think kids should volunteer more.

If your child enrolls after 6th grade, there's a waiver. Enrolling in 9th grade is a waiver of 30 hours, so you'd need 45 hours to finish the requirement. Here's a presentation that includes the information: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Zi8WWdJ8d7iBXMYcbiQZdQOsYghk5qQj3TdDXodS0_Y/edit#slide=id.gfd867020e6_0_423

Also note that there are some required classes that include SSL hours: 30 hours are earned in middle school (10 per year), 5 in health, and 15 in the required National, State, and Local (NSL) Government class.

Yes, we too were concerned about this entering public in 9th. Managed to have >75 completed prior to the covid shutdown. Attended/worked as a CIT in a Y summer camp for a few weeks at age 13-14(?) and DS was set. There were also summer of service type camp offering for a 2 week period. I note that our HS has a used book sale where they are looking for volunteers every weekend for weeks, to accept books, so again the hours can accumulate quickly and help your school in the process! Good luck!

75, its not a bit deal. The school offer all kinds of ways to do it, like extra assignments with making slides for some cause or reason.

Technically, they are supposed to complete certain activities in those classes. Up through last year, teachers seldom verified to the SSL coordinator that the work was done. This year, we were asked to certify.
