For folks who choose public HS over private and say "I'll save the money and instead supplement the public HS", what types of things do you consider to supplement your child's educational experience?
This is for Jackson Reed but could be any local public. |
| I don't think anyone says that. I think what people say is. "I'll save the money and instead be better able to afford the college of my kid's choosing." Or, "I don't have another $50k/yr in the budget so my kid is going to stay in public school and I will supplement where my budget allows". |
| AOPS, private college counselor, private SAT/ACT/AP tutor |
| Writing tutor. Goes over my kid’s written assignments as turned in to school, but provides much more detailed feedback. Additional assignments when class work is light. |
Well first of all you have it backwards. Most publics are better particularly in Math & Science. Any religious private is going to be lacking in those subjects compared to public. Mine went from Private to public we had them tutored in math & science & the language they were taking as our private lacked in those areas. How did I know that? My other kids went to public for HS. So during the summer before freshman year, we knew what our kid needed. Most publics have curriculum online not all privates do I would start there. And compare the two. |
Does your teenager agree to do more work that isn't required? |
My teen is in honors pre-calc in 10th grade at a top DC private and his/her best friend is in pre-calc at Jackson Reed and the private is teaching about 4 times the material---they will focus on a top for weeks and explore all sorts of problems at a deep level. JR runs through it in a day--they simply hit the most superficial highlights. The exam problems are about 25% of the difficulty of those on the private school's exams The kids compare homework most weeks and all exams. I have 2 other kids in DCPS and am not anti-DCPS but the JR math is pretty pathetic in this class. I am sure other classes get better--i know kids are decently prepared for college. |
Yeah, this was kid driven. Kid can see they’re not as strong a writer as some peers and expressed a lot of frustration about lack of feedback from teachers. |
| Can the poster who uses the writing tutor give a bit more information, like how you found the tutor, how often they meet, and how many years you have used or plan to them? Is your child resistant to the extra assignments? I've thought about doing something similar for my middle schooler at some point. |
Your kid is very cool!! |
OP here. DD is so bored and unchallenged in 8th grade, so if JR is more of the same, then yes. It doesn’t look like private is going to work out, and SWW is a crapshoot, so I’m trying to think about how we will keep her engaged. (I admit right now this is about managing my anxiety.) |
Can you say more about AOPS? What are the classes like in terms of format, interaction, etc? Thank you! |
How did you find a writing tutor? Have you used the tutor for all years of HS? Thank you. |
It will be. 9th grade is a joke and wasted year. |
It’s just Varsity Tutors. $260/month, but it’s comprehensive and turnkey, so you’re paying for convenience. I signed up in the middle of a fight in the middle of the school year, so if you are thinking this far ahead you may be able to do much better than me! |
