How much are high school sports/activities?

The thread about marching band for me thinking…

What’s the cost for sports and extracurriculars at your high school? What school?

It depends on the sport and activity. There is no set “price”.

No real 'price' but I've had 2 kids play JV sports and 1 who just made varsity team. For JV, there was a recommendation (not requirement) to join booster club ($50) and both had to buy part of the uniform (less than $50 I think) (jersey provided, but needed bottoms, and obviously their own shoes and equipment).

But I was a bit surprised when the kid who just made varsity came home with a long list of expected purchases (including multiple jerseys with last name printed on them) which comes to about $350.

Nothing for JV boys soccer except for an inexpensive shirt and socks. The uniform top and shorts were provided. We were also encouraged to join the booster club (optional).

mcps sports and activities are free. your child does not have to pay to play/participate. however, teams/groups request donations from all involved to help keep things running. I have seen requests from $100-$250 or so per season for my kids. $350 seems a little excessive but if kids are getting jerseys with names on them etc, at least you are walking away with something they can keep.

This is pretty misleading for sports and totally wrong for activities. Sports are free but you do have to buy the gear and that can be costly depending on the sport. Even dance required the purchase of some clothing for the showcase - and dance is a for credit class. Activities all have a fee. It’s like $5 to attend most sporting events, a bit more for playoffs. Homecoming dance was about $20. I forget what prom costs. School clubs are mostly free.

I'm this PP. It's true that I heard it from the kid rather than the coach. But kid insisted the coach told them they had to buy the stuff. She will keep it in the end, but it is a dictated list of stuff from a dictated vendor-- all purchased as a group order.

A parent can volunteer and put names on jerseys for a very low cost.
