Blair Science Olympiad Team and Robotics Team

Anonymous
My DC is a raising 9th grader who will be in the Blair SMCS program. Child is interested in participating in science olympiad or robotics team. Is it by audition or can any child join the teams? How competitive is it to get into any of these teams? How about the debate team? Just planning ahead. Child is currently in a middle school science olympiad team, robotics and debate team. DC would love to continue if at all possible. I would love to hear from parents who have kids in these teams. Thank you in advance!

Not sure about robotics, but science olympiad team in Blair is one of the most competitive one among all clubs. It forms three teams, only team A is guaranteed to attend the regional contest. Team B and C have more team members, yet it is tough to even get into Team C.

Sci oly or sci bowl?

Anyone can join Robototics, not just the magnet kids. They meet after school on Thursday. But once Build season begins (first Saturday in Jan) its both weekned days, and 4-5 after school days a week. You do not have to do all the days, but Build season is intense.

Apologies for my overlooking. I meant science bowl.

Where do you go that your middle schooler has science Olympiad, robotics, and debate?

There are lots of extracurricular activities outside of MCPS and outside of the county kids can participate.

Robotics is open to all. The team welcomes all levels of participation but you are more likely to find the experience rewarding if you invest the time. Build season is very intense- committed team members meet for several hours Saturday and Sunday as well as after school several days during the week. They basically design and build a robot in less than 2 months. There are lots of opportunities for leadership and initiative since all aspects of design and building are student-led.
If you are interested in Blair’s robotics team, you should look up the FIRST robotics website

How long does it last?

Is it realistic to do robotics with a fall sport?
