Glasses/Age for Eye Issues?

Anonymous
I'm turning 50 this year and my eyesight is perfectly fine. I'm a little paranoid that I should be having some vision issues by this age. I asked my PCP to do an old school vision test, which was perfect. But should I still go get an eye exam even though I'm not having any problems at all? Just go to the eye doctor and ask for what?

Yes...they can measure your pressure and look for cancer. You don't have to go every year but occasionally.

I was 20/20 in my 50's. Not so by mid 60's.

I've worn glasses/contact lenses since ES. Mid-50s now. I've only known my mom with the same. Meanwhile, my dad, 82, still has perfect vision.

No need for reading glasses? I think I remember my eye doctor told me that pretty much everyone got presbyopia starting mid forties.

NP here ~ maybe pretty much everyone, but not everyone. No need for reading glasses, any glasses. I'm 62 w/ 20/20

Yes, get checked for things like glaucoma. And good to have a baseline to compare against in the future.

Get them checked every two years so you have an established history and they can see any changes over time. They'll check blood pressure and check for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, tears, etc.

No different, really, than an annual physical, gyn check-up, or dentist.

I'm the OP. Thanks, everyone. No, I don't even need reading glasses. Still 20/20. But I will go ahead and make that baseline appointment, which hopefully. Got my first colonoscopy this year also, so might as well check out all the moving parts.

^^hopefully my insurance covers.

As someone who has worn glasses since I was eleven, and now have an array of reading glasses, vision glasses and contact lenses--may I say how jealous I am of your perfect vision?

Even if your insurance doesn't cover it, an eye exam is incredibly cheap. Visionworks, Target, Wal-Mart, Costco are perfectly fine for basic eye care and the cost is about $75.
