| Our non farms middle school production play is this spring. It seems like the parents are heavily involved with play in obtaining ad space and volunteering for other things. It seems like the trend is if the parent are actively involved in the play production, then their child is chosen for a top role/billing in play. This is our first time trying out for a role in the school play. Is this procedure typical of all mcps middle schools? |
| Middle school play is entirely different at each and every school. Name your school and people can give you some insight. |

At our school (low farms) we have a tiny budget ($400), and the crew/teachers do a lot (too much). Our student crew is super popular. There were 2 Saturdays where the drama teacher asked parents to volunteer their time to help build the set, but that was for a total of 4 hrs each, and I think it was a small group (5-8 adults). That's all
I don't think most of the leads' parents have done anything... |
| Our MS play expects parents to put in I think 10 hours sometime during the spring. The kids are cast into the play long before this, so I don't think they're correlated, though I suppose the teacher could take 6th grade parent participation into account when casting in 7th grade or something. I don't think she's organized enough to do that, though... |

Are you sure it’s not the other way around—that the parents of the leads became super-involved because their kids were cast?
Most of the productions my kid has been involved in were cast before any of the other work happened. I’m sure I’d probably pitch in a bit more to make sure the production was a success if my kid were the lead. |
I’m curious which MCPS middle school is entirely “non-FARMS,” myself. |
I saw the same thing and chuckled inside. People think schools are "FARMS" or "non-FARMS," not realizing that every single school in MCPS has at least a handful of kids receiving free and reduced meals. |
| Nope it's not unusual. We saw it happen at our high school every year. It's kind of a pay to play situation. Kind of sad that it plays such a big role in who gets the lead roles. |
| My child attends Roberto Clemente middle school and the plays have zero to no parental involvement. |
| Maybe they deleted the nonFARMS, but I’m not seeing it in this thread. All I see is lowFARMS from probably the OP |
Oh I see it , the first post
