Social Security and Medicare when you retire overseas

Anonymous
We are exploring a few countries to live in for retirement.

I know that Medicare does not cover claims overseas. However, can you still keep your Medicare if you live overseas?

Can you continue to collect social security if you are not residing in the U.S. full time?

We plan on keeping our house in the U.S. and will continue to have our banks accounts, etc. in the U.S.

Both DH and I are U.S. citizens.

Ssa.gov/international has a lot of info on payments while living abroad (short answer is yes you can get ss in most countries) and I am pretty sure you can keep Medicare as long as you pay for it.

You can still receive SS to a US bank account like Schwab (which due to easy intl use, most retirees use) and for Medicare, you should plan on picking a NON-Advantage supplement and a cheap part D plan as soon as you turn 65 and plan on paying monthly for that and your part D and the hospital part (so about $400 per person per month) while you live overseas to keep access to less expensive healthcare in the US since you never know if/when you may need or choose to return. Think of it as life insurance that you'll pay until you die.

Have fun overseas- it's my dream but my DH was recently dx with a chronic illness that makes that dream impossible while he's still alive.
