Why is marching band so expensive?

Anonymous
My son is eligible for marching band next year and I got the school cash online email saying fee pay is available. Holy cow its expensive! Over $400!

Does the football team also have to pay $400 for uniforms and participation?

That’s crazy. No way am I paying that.

What school is that? Do they tell you what is covered in the cost?

At my kid's high school, the cost is $150 (+$40 if you need band shoes). The website says it "helps to cover transportation to events/games, dinners for home games, and more."

Ask what's covered. It's easy to embezzle the funds.

Call the principal and ask. If you don't like the answer, ask your school board representative.

Same for our school.

T-shirt, black socks, band shoes, and then the annual fee of $150. They eat after half time at every home game, have a big dinner at the end of the season.

FWIW, the costs were similar to my other two kids sports. None of them were more than $150.

Adding, the only time it was more than $150 was during the Disney World travel event in the Spring. But they do not go every year.

Instruments, uniforms, etc. are expensive. Many schools have music booster clubs that raise funds and keep student fees down. Ask the director what the fee pays for.

At our non-W, high FARMS High School, it's $600 for cheerleading! And no, football players don't pay that much. I get the feeling that the most loved teams aren't subject to those fees.

The most loved teams have boosters clubs footing the bill.

$400 for marching band is absurd.

Most schools have one, maybe two sports that actually generate revenue: football and/or boys’ basketball. The other sports/teams generally cost more money than they make. At some schools, the football program helps fund their athletics programs, so everyone benefits.

The football team should pay for marching band as they are there to support the team.

Yeah.

And then the marching band would reimburse them bc nobody would be there to watch them perform if it wasnt in the middle of a football game
