Tired of Managing Millenials

Anonymous
I have two this week who are throwing fits b/c they both asked for the same week off (one for a wedding and the other for her son’s HS graduation). The former went and booked tickets even before asking for the time off. She announced to me today that she will shift her workload during that time to another employee, also without checking with me. I’ve told the two of them to work it out or I will make an executive decision neither will like. We are a small office and May will be very busy. I cannot have two employees out the same week. The fact that you bought tickets to travel before getting approved leave is not my problem. Ditto that your son’s graduation is also that week.

Why does someone need a WEEK off for a graduation? I can see three days, tops.

I'm tired of working for jerks.

And how does a millennial have a hs graduate? I'm 36 and am an older millennial.

My sister is an old millennial (41) and her DS is graduating this spring.

You could have had a kid at 18

A millennial has a son graduating HS? And needs a week off for this? I'd try negotiating with that person first. Seems like they would have the most flexibility.

Good thing I’m not one of those. But everyone can’t have time off at the same time if work demands necessitate a certain amount of coverage.

What are your typical guidelines about taking time off? At my current job, it’s a) always at manager’s discretion and b) first come first serve. We always remind people to put in their requests early for any “popular” times.

Who needs a week off for a wedding?

I feel like there’s something you’re not telling us about the situation, like that you’re a new manager and they’ve traditionally been able to take vacation whenever they want. Or that the workload could be managed and they know that but you’re on a power trip.

Millennials were born from 1982 to 1997.

Anyone born outside that timeframe isn’t one.

OP you don’t own the company. Don’t worry about it. They might fire you, too.

People do have kids at ages 17 through 24. It’s not common around here but it happens.

This reminds me of the post about the 47 year old pregnant doctor, parent of teens. DCUM couldn’t believe that she’d started having kids during residency!

OP- I feel you. I am slowly replacing my millennials with Gen Z. They work and are happy. My most recent was my 36 year old complainer who magically can't come to work 1 day a week (did pre Covid) and then couldn't turn her camera on. During her review in Nov she asked for a raise and I asked for her resignation. Replaced her easily with a recent college grad. Quick learner and lost 50k less.

Just flipped another one too. I am loving it!
