Should new MD work as W-2 or 1099 for a practice?

Receive salary or take a split of what they’re billed at?

Just want to point out that there is never really an optional choice between being an employee and a contractor-- either you meet the test for being an employee or you don't.

I know the difference, just wanted to know what arrangement is best. Two practices offering two types of reimbursement.

MD here. I’d take salary for the first 2 years while you are building your practice and then if you have the volume and numbers you can convert to eat what you kill/1099. There are different taxes and deductions associated with each so you will have to run the numbers wince you have real ones to work with. You should pay closer attention to what the path to partnership is and how serious they are/what the track record is for people making partner. Bc it is very easy for any practice to let you bill as an employee or 1099 for 2 years and then boot you.

Does the practice take a lot of HMO and cavitation? Go with salary, if they cover your malpractice
If mostly PPO, q099 may be better

Capitation (freaking autocorrect )
