letter just arrived, 3+% increase in assessed value even though all the comps around us have had to cut prices multiple times to sell
is it worth trying to appeal? or just a waste of time? |
Same question, but ours is over 6%. Considering we had a special assessment and the max three prior years, I’d tell you to take your 3%.
(So, no helpful advice only commiserating) |
How much higher will your taxes be - your actual taxes, that you actually have to pay - in 2024, compared to 2023? How much is your time worth? |
| Look, the issue isn't whether the value of your house actually increased or whether comps had to cut prices. The issue is simply is your house likely to sell at or above its tax assessed value? If it is, you have no chance of a successful appeal. And if it isn't, you have to ask how much of a drop in the assessment would you need to make the appeal effort. Anything under $100k wouldn't be worth the effort. |
PP complaining - this is absolutely the correct way to approach. Have to get past the “principle of the matter” idea. |
| ok mine went DOWN by $100,000. How is that....possible? This is Petworth. I don't know whether to complain or what. |
why in the world would you challenge a reduction in your taxes? |
I shouldn't! It just seems wacky! Anyway, I just checked this site: https://mytax.dc.gov/_/ Apparently my paper report has numbers in the wrong places and my assessed value did actually increase. |
|
We plan to appeal. The market is down, even in our insulated area of the city. The tax assessment is now higher than what the house would sell for.
Frankly, in this market, everyone should appeal. |
My assessment is still below what my house would sell for, so I have no intention of appealing. |
| Giving the govt $1 too much is always worth my time out of principal. Who wakes up one day and says it is enjoyable to be mugged by the local govt for your hard earned money? |
People who appreciate the services we get from our taxes? Schools, buses, fire department, etc. |
| I'm appealing --- mine went up 17%, in the past 2 years ... from 22 - 23 it went up 13% and this year another 4.5. This time I'm fighting it. |
| Looks like DC figured out how to make up for lost commercial property tax and sales tax revenue without officially increasing tax rates. |
Oh, do you have evidence of taxable assessments higher than market value? Mine is still about $100k+ below market value and I suspect a lot of others are lagging as well. |
