Dna tests

Did you ever do one on your rescue? Was it accurate? We did an embark test. We were told at the rescue our dog was a lab mix (mom was lab/pit and dad was unknown).

Dna test said our dog was actually majority boxer and Rottweiler and the next largest breed percentage was Great Pyrenees. We are shocked! We were told she would be around 65 pounds (which seemed small for how large she is already) but the weight estimate is 80 pounds.

Also do you feed a puppy differently based on their breed? We were feeding her like she was going to be a mid sized dog. But should we change it to large breed dog?

We did for both of our rescues and I think it’s accurate. One is a 50/50 mix that is spot on based on pictures online, and the other is a very generic mutt that is half Boxer. Never would have guessed the boxer, but we can see it now in behaviors and appearance. They’re cheap and it’s fun, so why not?

Yes, one was a surprise (she looks like a chihuahua but is Australian cattle dog with Pomeranian and terrier).

There is a reddit group for DNA test reveals, people trust the results

I used Embark, supposed to be the gold standard, for both my rescues and trust the results - my female had puppies that she they arrived into the shelter with and their owners Embarked them too and I can see what breed Papa was.

The tests with the largest numbers of uses/the largest database tend to be reliable; the smaller (cheaper) ones, not so reliable. Some people like Wisdom but I find their results oddly presented (by groups rather than by breed).

We used embark and it was accurate in terms of breed. I got the health portion done too, and we shall see how accurate that part is.

The weight part was NOT accurate.

Was the weight over or under?

We did Wisdom Panel (though I agree Embark is generally thought to be better) and the breed results make sense with her looks and personality.

Did Embark with the previous dog and the results were surprising but made sense. Did it with the current dog and he evidently contains 7 breeds, at which point the concept of breeds seems irrelevant (unless you have some sort of issue with a particular breed)

Our dog ended up being a purebred! We thought she might be but test confirmed. Her report profile showed other dogs she was related to.

Get it checked by both companies and see if the data matches. My research showed that it didn't, so we never tested our mutt
