Which Federal insurance plan?

Anonymous
I have a spouse with several medical conditions (heart, allergies, etc) and several ongoing prescriptions. I have a teen who sees an endocrinologist and wants to see a dermatologist. I have the usual (mammograms, due for a colonoscopy this year, etc). I’m becoming a fed and am now facing the choice about which health plan to select.

I want a plan that’s easy to work with and will not fight about approving things. I would like a reasonable limit for out-of-pocket annual expenses, because we have at least one more surgery coming this year plus some other stuff. I’d rather pay a little more in my premium and feel like we are covered for the big expenses.

What federal policy do you have and why do you or don’t you like it? Thanks!

BC/BS Basic. As long as you use preferred providers it’s pretty dang good

^^ I pay $30 copay, or $40 specialist, that's it. No deductible, no co-insurance percentage.

and Metlife High PPO for dental.

and maxed out 6x salary life insurance. You're locked in life insurance selection for years.

BCBS Basic is great. If you need any out of network benefits choose standard. Either GEHA or MetLife high option is good for dental.

BCBS Basic is great. I ended up switching to the Carefirst HDHP because it has much better coverage for kids with special needs, but otherwise BCBS Basic is great.

+1 for BCBS basic as long as your providers/meds are in network. Lots of provider options, no deductible, reasonable copay for specialist visits.

I've had bcbs basic for 21 years.

My dad was a fed and I have been one my whole career. I've had BC/BS standard my whole life. My out of pocket costs have been minimal.

Bobs Basic, I also have MetLife dental as supplental dental since BCBS basic doesn’t have dental really and VSP vision.

BCBS Basic or Standard is great!

Adding to the chorus of BC/BS Basic. I became a fed in my early 20s, had Aetna HDHP for a couple years, and it was a joke. No complaints whatsoever about BCBS! I know this isn't relevant for you now, OP, but I was stunned when I didn't even get a hospital bill for the birth of my DS in 2021 (I was expecting at least a copay for the hospital stay!).

Is BCBS basic a better value than United Healthcare?

You just don't want to deal with United Healthcare. They are the epitome of a crappy, selfish, shady insurance company.

Agree with all the recommendations for BCBS.
