Electric fireplaces

We are renovating an apartment in building that does not have/allow wood/gas fireplaces. What do folks think of electric fireplaces? Cheesy? The reno will be somewhat highend so don't want to ruin it by making a glaring mistake.

They are no more a fire hazard than an electric heater would be, maybe less so as there is no cord to trip over.

I think they can look great in a modern setting, and look cheesy in a traditional setting. The trick is not to treat it like the real thing, but appreciate it for what it is. We have a very modern one in a very modern setting and I love it.
