Just curious about the age progression from microwaves to ovens to stoves. My kids have been helping with making cookies since they were toddlers.
What have your kids baked/cooked over the years? Do you supervise them? |
| Mine is 10 and helps me with baking but we generally use box mixes. She can make brownies alone, a bagel in toaster, a sandwich and a bowl of cereal… that’s it. I realise she could probably be doing way more but there is really no need to yet so she just hasn’t. She’s got plenty of time before she leaves home. |
| I have 2 teens who have been able to make pretty much anything I can make since age 10. They can use the instant pot, bread machine, food processor, etc. it’s helpful since now anyone can make dinner if one of us is late coming home. Plus my kids can also look up recipes online and make suggestions for my weekly meal planning |
| I told DCs never put any metal and plastic into microwave when they were very young. DC7 can probably microwave popcorn but I don’t let them use oven yet. |

6yo can
Crack eggs and separate yolks Cream butter Measure and mix wet and dry ingredients Fold egg whites Use a stand mixer, food processor and blender Chop vegetables and fruit |
| I got my two year old these great plastic knives and she can basically go to town cutting fruit. They’re really dull. |
You're a great mom! |
|
13 year old is really good at making omelets and smoothies
15 year old can make just about anything - I often give her a hello fresh kit and she whips up dinner 9 year old - still in the helping mom phase with chopping, stirring under supervision. |
|
My 6 and 8 year olds can make scrambled eggs by themselves. I supervise at the stove but they can do everything.
We've been teaching the 8 year old to use the microwave now that he can reach. They help me bake a lot. They could do it themselves if they needed to. |

Breakfast food without a lot of instruction. Many dinners with me supervising and giving instruction. They are 11 and 13.
A dinner example would be butter chicken, jasmine rice, and sautéed spinach or snap peas. |
|
9 & 10 year olds:
scramble eggs, make French toasts, use the rice maker, smoothies, microwave their own food |
|
13 yo— can make a few different meals, plus pancakes, eggs, waffles, etc; makes brownies and cakes alone.
9 yo— can use the instantpot and microwave; I still supervise her using the oven/stove. |
|
My 8 year old can make eggs (scrambled, omelet, easy/hardover, boiled), knows how to make rice, can make mac and cheese, dumplings, noodles, grilled cheese sandwich, pancakes. She knows how to use the microwave to reheat food, how to use the oven and how to use a knife. Same for my 10 year old DS.
My 13 year old can make dinner for our family on her own. |
| Honestly, hardly anything. I hate cooking and try to do the bare minimum myself. |
|
12YO can make just about anything incl yeast breads, full meals, etc. cooking has become a hobby so they seek out new things to try.
8YO - basically nothing as they are coasting on older sib’s offerings lol. But can measure, stir, etc. |
